Travel to Hakodate, Hokkaido

Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan, is known for its delicious seafood, old-fashioned buildings, and stunning views from Mount Hakodate. It’s the only city in Hokkaido connected to the main part of Japan by train, thanks to the Hokkaido Shinkansen. Visiting Hakodate is a must if you’re exploring northern Japan and want to experience something unique.

 

Transportation

To reach Hakodate from Tokyo, the easiest way is to take the JR Hokkaido Shinkansen. It costs ¥23,000 and takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes. If you’re not a Japanese resident, you can save money on transportation by using thJR East South Hokkaido passwhich costs ¥35,000 for 6 days

Finally, some flights connect Tokyo and major Japanese cities to Hakodate airport.

Things to do in Hakodate

  • Explore Fort Goryokaku: This massive star-shaped fort dates back to the Edo period (1600~1868) and is a prime spot for cherry blossom viewing during the Hanami season. In particular, make sure to climb the observatory tower (¥1000) for stunning views of the fort and the surrounding Hakodate city.
  • Experience Mount Hakodate at Night: Whether you hike up or take the ropeway (¥1500), Mount Hakodate offers one of Japan’s best night cityscapes. Its nighttime vista has earned it a spot as one of Japan’s top 3 views.
  • Indulge in Fresh Seafood at the Morning Market: Enjoy a breakfast or lunch at the local morning market, where you can savor delicious and fresh seafood. Join the locals in starting your day right at the market!
  • Try the Unique Lucky Pierrot: Don’t miss out on trying the quirky yet delicious Lucky Pierrot. Found all over Hakodate, this shop is exclusive to the city. Their signature dish, the Lucky Burger, features chicken and a mysterious sauce. Importantly, each Lucky Pierrot has its distinct atmosphere, so try a different one if you enjoy the experience!
  • Explore the Motomachi District: Wander through the Motomachi District to admire its heritage buildings, including the grand Hakodate Town Hall. These buildings are beautifully illuminated at night and conveniently located near the Mount Hakodate ropeway. Note that building admissions stop at 5 PM.
  • Taste Yakitori Bento: Sample the Yakitori Bento, a dish of rice and skewered grilled pork with a unique sauce, available only at the Hasegawa Store. Enjoy it in-store or take it away for a delightful Hakodate treat.
