Travel to hachinohe
Hachinohe is a coastal city located in Aomori prefecture, Japan and it is famous for its seafood, the “seagull shrine” (Kabushima shrine), and for hosting Japan’s biggest market (Tatehana Wharf Morning Market).
Transportation
You can easily travel to Hachinohe via rail with the JR Tohoku shinkansen from Tokyo. The fastest way is to take the Hayabusa Tohoku Shinkansen which will only stop in Sendai and Morioka before reaching Hachinohe station in 2 hours and 45 minutes. The train costs around 16.500 Yen one way. Within Hachinohe, you can easily move around using the JR train lines (JR Hachinohe line) and local bus. Lastly, If you are a foreign visitor traveling to the Tohoku region you can save a lot by using the JR east Tohoku pass. In fact, the pass only costs 30000 Yen and can be used for unlimited rides for 5 consecutive days. You can purchase the pass on Klook.
Things to do in Hachinohe
-
Visit Kabushima Shrine. Take the JR Hachinohe line from Hachinohe station and get off at Same station. From there it’s a 10 minutes walk to Kabushima Shrine. This is a stunning seaside shrine famous for being frequented by seagulls. These birds will fly all around the small hill where the shrine is located and it is fun to spot them! Additionally, I recommend eating a donut from Stocked Doughnuts nearby, they are by far the best donuts in Tohoku!
-
Lunch or breakfast at the morning market. In fact Hachinohe Tatehana Wharf market is considered to be Japan’s biggest market. Here you can try all kinds of street food. However please note market is not held when weather conditions are bad.

Dine at Miroku Yokocho. Hachinohe is famous for its seafood and you will find plenty of restaurants between the narrow alleys of Miroku Yokocho. Alternatively, many stalls here provide ramen, tempura, and much more. My recommended spot is Saba no Eki, where you can eat many kinds of grilled tuna and even fried sushi!
